Full Description
In exceptional original condition, a very fine box made from solid olive wood with domed top and original brass hinges and lock and key. The front and top crossed with brass mounts of gothic design and set with large natural purple and white semi precious lepidolite cabochons - original also and set in fine brass collars with brass rope detils, these also have no damage or marks.

The box retains its original inset brass makers plaque between the hinges on the inner face for Marshalls & Sons, George Street, Edinburgh. The company began in the late 18th Century at 87 George Street and is known for very high quality silver and inlaid boxes. It was bought in 1891 by Alexander James Brook who had worked at Marshalls since 1853 along with his son who had also worked at Marshalls since 1873 and who changed the company name to Brook & Son, continuing in the same fine quality traditions until 1941.

The box is beautifully made and the lovely grain and colour of the olivewood has mellowed to warm rich tones with a lovely original finish, inside the box is lined with unwaxed olive wood with a most attractive pale cream and dark grain.

A beautiful and rare example in olive wood, and would make a very lovely gift.
