Full Description
A very rare and very wonderful small walnut lowboy with single long drawer over ring turned legs with shaped cross stretchers on low bun feet.
The drawer with its original solid elm lining with hand forged nailed up sides and base and retaining the original hand cast brass drop handle, with sweep mark from centuries of use.
The twin boarded top retaining the original pegs, now slightly proud with expansion, and the whole with a good and rich colour, sturdy and original timbers other than one rear bun foot which is a very good 19th century replacement.
As with almost all early walnut, the lowboy once suffered from woodworm – very early in its life -which was quite extensive in places but the structure remains sound. The worm is long since treated and dead and the smattering of visible holes have become well blended through subsequent centuries of use and wax and are now part of the general patination.
A charming example, beautifully proportioned and of small dimensions. Rich and mellow in colour with old worm holes, depletions, small dings and marks evidencing the lowboy’s natural long history and generations of use.
A really wonderful and very early lowboy.
