Full Description
With a beautiful colour and naturally well developed patina, this early Georgian oak clothes press is very usable and substantial. The two upper doors with fielded arched wainscot panels over two small original fielded panel doors which open to reveal a vacant interior and original back boards with a double run of oak pegs (a hanging rail could easily be added if required). The left hand door with key and working lock, the right hand door with thumb turn. The doors are straight and without warps and close very smoothly.
The iron H hinges are hand forged and with the handles are early replacements which have been on the press for a century and more. The doors and twin base drawers open and close properly and retain their original and substantial oak linings.
Lovely chamfered and fielded panelled sides and all peg jointed with original timbers throughout of excellent colour and natural patination, the inner faces showing the hand adze marks and very substantial boards throughout.
A well proportioned, heavy and beautiful example, the top lifts off the base for transport, made by skilled hands in c. 1730 and of a practical small size.
