Full Description
This beautiful pair Gainsborough chairs are hand made in solid walnut with wonderful cabriole legs to front terminating in large well carved claw and ball feet and with lovely scallop shell carvings to the knees. The rear legs are raked back and the serpentine shape to the backs is repeated to the front seat rails.

The chair arms are spectacular, beautifully carved with foliage and scrolls and the chairs are comfortable and capacious.

Both chairs are upholstered in a high quality heavyweight cotton and linen mix fabric with slightly raised chalk pattern and in a pale lemon colour.

The chairs date from c. 1840 but are so well made that they appear to be mid 1740s in every detail and certainly in the weight and design. They were pronounced to be Georgian period by an expert from the Antiques Roadshow who viewed these in the 1980s.

However in my view these chairs are second quartile of the 19th century and are of excellent quality and condition with no faults or damage and only a few very small dings and knocks consistent with age and use.

The fabric in excellent and unworn condition also.
