Full Description
An extremely rare set of six original hand made dining chairs of exceptional quality.
Each with a very finely carved splat centered with a biblical scene and one with a hand carved inscription which reads ‘For Thee Mother, I made it for Thee’.
Truly unique and in very condition for age with no worm and only minor marks and knocks consistent with age and very careful use. A few small repairs and on a few of the chairs additional blocks have been added beneath the drop in seats to provide additional support. These are very well executive professional restorations and are only visible when the seat pads are removed.
It is hard to imagine how many months this set of chairs took this craftsman to make, or indeed what they would cost to have made by hand today.
And after all those months of work, to give these beautiful works of art as a gift to his mother with each splat so carefully composed and carved to demonstrate the deep and timeless love this son held for her.
This wonderful, emotive set of chairs are deserving of a place in a museum and yet remain usable and very comfortable. Of such quality that they have been used by generations and are still as strong and solid as when made. These date between 1780 and 1810 in my view. Probably made by a provincial craftsman using the timbers available and the chairs are a mix of yew wood and fruitwoods. Substantial elaborate spandrels, well shaped top rails, drop bell husks which tumble down the front legs and rise at the bases of the arm supports to the carvers and run along the backs and top rails of each chair.
Each seat pad newly upholstered and well padded and covered in a Versailles gold green velvet with
An extraordinary and beautiful set of chairs, entirely unique and wonderful.
