Full Description
An exceptionally rare Elizabeth I period carved oak chimney mantle piece. This would have sat above a stone fire surround and its large size and exemplary carving indicates a very grand palacial house.
The front panels are completely original including the beautifully carved and inlaid central fielded panel and it dates from c. 1570.
The have been some additions and alterations with panels added to the sides and a shelf top added to create a narrow desk – later elements which can be removed without harming the panel itself.On the market for the first time and in dry unrestored condition.A very beautiful and early example, fantastic quality carving, rare as hens teeth.Viewings and enquiries welcome.
